The woman was taken to a nearby hospital for care and has since been discharged.
Onlookers watched on as the woman’s other dog, who was not harmed, refused to leave the killed dog’s side, howling as it lay on the street motionless.
Ausgrid has taken responsibility for the incident, apologising to the owner for the shock and death of her pet.
“It’s believed a defective underground link box made part of the covered pit lid live. The area has now been made safe,” an Ausgrid spokesperson told The Nightly.
“A woman in her 50s was taken to hospital for observation and has now been released.
“Ausgrid has spoken to the woman and will be providing support.
“Our thoughts are with her and her loved ones after the sad passing of her dog.”
The company said a comprehensive investigation into its cause is now underway, adding they believe this is an isolated incident.
Recent upgrades to the footpath had been completed just weeks ago, with sections of the pedestrian thoroughfare now being ripped up for urgent investigations and work.
