Sydney storms: Penrith hit by 5cm hail as BOM issues severe thunderstorm warning across NSW

A warning for “very dangerous thunderstorms” has been issued after a western Sydney suburb was battered by hail as large as 5cm.

The potential for rain that could lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding, damaging wind gusts and large hailstones has been flagged for areas across Sydney on Saturday night.

Hailstones of 5cm were recorded in Penrith about 4pm on Saturday as the wild weather swept through, with winds of 91km/h recorded at Western Sydney Airport shortly beforehand.

The NSW State Emergency Service have urged those in Katoomba, Yass, Penrith, Lithgow, Jenolan Caves and Springwood to stay inside.

Parts of the Metropolitan, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Hunter, Illawarra and South West Slopes districts, including Katoomba, Yass, Penrith, Lithgow, Jenolan Caves and Springwood, may be affected by the weather, the Bureau of Meteorology have warned.

Locals have been urged to stay clear of creeks and storm drains and not wo walk, ride bikes, or drive through floodwaters.

Heavy rain, flash flooding, hail and damaging winds are also possible through the Central Tablelands and parts of the Hunter, Metropolitan, Illawarra, Southern Tablelands, North West Slopes and Plains, Central West Slopes and Plains, South West Slopes and Riverina Districts, including Goulburn, Dubbo, Mudgee, Katoomba, Yass and Parkes.

Flood warnings have been issued across the Thomson River, Cooper Creek, Barcoo River, Lower Balonne and Bokhara Rivers, and Balonne River Minor.
