A teenage boy needed rescuing after getting swept about 2km out to sea near Bundaberg.

A boy has been rescued after getting swept out to sea while paddleboarding off Queensland.

The teenager was paddleboarding at Woodgate Beach in Bundaberg about 2.30pm on Sunday when he was pushed out to sea by strong winds.

A person aboard a private helicopter spotted him about 2km from the beach.

A RACQ Lifeflight Rescue Helicopter crewman was winched down into the water near him.

The boy and rescuer were strapped together and both winched into the helicopter.

The boy, who was only wearing boardshorts, was suffering mild hypothermia but did not need to be taken to hospital.

He was dropped off at a nearby oval.
