Tennant Creek rattled by 3.6 magnitude Northern Territory earthquake

A small earthquake struck the Northern Territory on Tuesday morning.

The 3.6 magnitude tremor struck just northeast of Tennant Creek about 10.22am local time.

It originated at a depth of 10km, according to Geoscience Australia.

There are just over 3000 people living in Tennant Creek, according to the Australia Bureau of Statistics.

While the effects of an earthquake lower than 3.5 on the magnitude scale are rarely felt, larger earthquakes up to a 5.4 magnitude are often felt but rarely cause damage.
