A manhunt is underway in south-east Queensland this morning for a thief who stole a family car by using a tow truck at a Logan shopping centre.

A thief posing as a tow truck driver has been captured on camera stealing a Commodore from a shopping centre south of Greater Brisbane on Tuesday.

The unregistered, unmarked truck was filmed dragging the Commodore sedan away from the carpark at the Grand Plaza shopping centre in the Logan suburb of Browns Plains.

A passerby thought something unusual was happening and captured video revealing the hasty getaway, during which the bumper of the car being towed was ripped off.

The car’s owner Mako Shanks had left it for less than an hour, visiting two shops before heading back out to the carpark, and realising her Commodore was now missing.

The whereabouts of Shanks’ car remains unknown, but it was last seen on Chambers Flat Rd in Browns Plains.

Shanks lashed the thief in comments to 7NEWS.

“Get a f****** job. You’re nothing but a f****** low life,” she said.

“It’s heartbreaking because you go to work, sweat your guts out, work for what you got, and some low life takes it.”

But Shanks thanked the quick-thinking witness for filming the incident, a kind bystander who calmed her nerves throughout the ordeal, and security and police for their help to file a report.
