A child has died and a 34-year-old woman is fighting for her life after a horror fire at a Queensland home.

Emergency services were called to an address on Merritt Street in Harristown at around 12.30am on Wednesday, finding a house engulfed in flames when they arrived.

Six people managed to escape the property as the house burned, including a 34-year-old man, a 36-year old woman, and four children.

Initially, Queensland Police reported that a child was “unaccounted for”.

Tragically, police later confirmed that the “unaccounted for” child’s body had been located in the burnt out remains of the property.

“Police can confirm a body has been located inside a house which was damaged by fire at Harristown,” a Queensland Police spokesperson said.

“Formal identification of the deceased is ongoing.”

The woman and two girls - one a toddler and the other in primary school - suffered significant burns and were taken to Toowoomba Hospital in a life-threatening condition.

The man and two boys - one a teenager and the other in primary school - also suffered burns, but were taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Jenny Smith, a neighbour, described the horrific scenes as the fire burnt children.

“Little children were burnt and they were taken away in the ambulance,” she told 7NEWS.

“It was bright orange along here from my bedroom window, it was very close to the fence line.”

Ms Smith described the family as friendly.

“They usually wave to me when I’m leaving.”

Queensland Police have declared a crime scene, with an investigation now underway to determine the cause of the fire and details surrounding the child’s death.

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward by contacting Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
