Two people have been injured when the car they were travelling in crashed, was ripped in half and caught fire on a Melbourne road.

The grey Nissan coupe was driving south along Glenferrie Rd in Kooyong at 1.50am on Friday when it somehow left the roadway.

The vehicle then clipped a traffic pole, with the impact believed to have broken the car in half before it exploded into flames.

One part of the car hit a nearby brick wall and the second part landed on the road.

The driver and his male passenger, both aged in their early 20s, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

They were taken to hospital.

Police are yet to determine how the crash happened and have urged anyone with dashcam or information to contact them.
