Detectives began investigating the baby’s death and on February 11, 2025, two women, aged 41 and 51, were arrested.

They were taken to Coffs Harbour and Kempsey police stations, where they were charged with manslaughter.

Police allege the younger woman was an unregistered midwife when the baby was born, while the older woman had no medical qualifications and had been practising unregistered home-birth midwifery.

The women were granted bail before appearing in Coffs Harbour Local Court on Wednesday. The matter was adjourned to the same court on Thursday.
