Four planes were taking part in an aerobatics display when the tragedy unfolded.

A pilot is in a critical condition after a plane crashed while performing a stunt at an air show in Victoria.

Victoria Police say the small aircraft was performing a loop as part of an aerobatic show and didn’t pull up properly before crashing into the ground.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said one person had sustained serious upper and lower body injuries.

That person has been airlifted to The Alfred in Melbourne in a critical condition.

The incident was first reported at 5.35pm local time.

The Avalon Australian International Airshow is a six-day event with hundreds of events scheduled at the Avalon Airport, roughly an hour’s drive south-west of Melbourne’s CBD.

The show has been put on hold while emergency services assess the situation.

Witnesses watched in horror as the plane hit the ground, with the crowd relieved to hear the pilot had survived the crash.

“When they told us he was alive everyone started clapping and carrying on - it was really good to hear,” one witness told The Australian.

Others took the social media to share what they had seen: “Just saw an aerobatic plane go down at the Avalon airshow. Prayers to the pilot” one person wrote on X.

The plane was participating in an airshow when the crash occurred.

V/Line, the service that runs regional trains in Victoria, said Avalon services were only operating in one direction after the incident.
