After refusal to accept cash at their restaurants, the storefront of a Nandos has been demolished after being run through by a car.

Cash advocates have allegedly carried out an attack on a popular fast food restaurant in Melbourne’s inner west, following news the chain had gone cashless.

A car was rammed into the front of a Nando’s on Barkly St in Footscray about 2.15am on Friday.

Spray-painted on the sides of the car was: “We don’t accept cash here.”

“On arrival, no person was present and a stolen white Volkswagen sedan was still on scene,” Victoria Police said.

“At this stage, investigators do not believe entry was gained to the building and the exact circumstances are still to be established.”

Victoria Police have established a crime scene, including boarding up the front of the restaurant.

The alleged attack is believed to be linked to Nando’s announcing its decision to go cashless earlier this year.

The popular chicken chain only accepts cards at restaurants, and it’s a decision that has raised divided customers across the country.

While it appears Nando’s has been cashless for some time, news of the card-only policy was brought to light in a Reddit post when a diner posted a photo of a sign at one busy store.

The note, placed on an EFTPOS machine, said: “We’re card only!

“Sorry, guess we’re part of the New World Order now.

“Just kidding, card payments mean we spend less time counting coins and more time perfecting your chicken.”
