A three-year-old girl has died in hospital after being hit by a car at peak hour in Melbourne’s southeast.

The girl was crossing the road with family — including her elderly relatives — at a pedestrian crossing near the intersection of James Cook Dr and Heatherton Rd in Endeavour Hills when she was struck about 8.30am on Thursday.

The girl suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Dandenong Hospital, where she has since died, police said on Friday.

Detective Sergeant Roslyn Wilson said the group was walking towards a playground at the time and the toddler “might have been ahead of all the other parties”.

The driver, a 24-year-old Endeavour Hills man, stopped at the scene and was arrested.

He has since been charged with one count of dangerous driving causing serious injury and will appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on October 23.

Police said further charges are expected to be considered following the child’s death.
