A child has been found dead in a caravan that caught fire in regional Victoria on Thursday.

The child was located inside the caravan after emergency services were called to Lake View St in Boort, 250km northwest of Melbourne, to extinguish the blaze about 5.50pm.

“Fire crews extinguished the blaze and a deceased child was located inside,” Victoria Police said.

An arson chemist has been called in to determine what caused the fire.

“Officers are aware of the impact that such a tragic incident has on family, community members and first responders and will ensure that welfare services are in place,” police said.

The investigation is ongoing.

Boort is described as “the Jewel of the Loddon region” and a “water wonderland” popular with tourists.
