A person has died and another has been left fighting for life after a car smashed into a tree south-east of Ballarat.

Police said they received a call that a car had hit a tree on Meredith-Mount Mercer Rd, Meredith, about 11.15pm on Saturday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and found the driver, who is yet to be formally identified, had died at the scene.

“The vehicle’s only passenger was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries,” police said.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined, and the investigation is ongoing.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has footage, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

So far this year 250 lives have been lost on Victorian roads, according to police.
