A driver has died in a fiery crash in Victoria.

The car was heading south on Merriang Rd in Woodstock when the driver started to overtake multiple other vehicles heading in the same direction just before 6pm on Sunday.

They veered onto the wrong side of the road to overtake, but when they swerved back into the correct lane, the driver lost control.

The car crashed into a tree and caught fire.

The driver was the only occupant of the car and died at the scene.

They are yet to be formally identified.

A second collision was caused by the initial crash when three cars travelling behind it attempted to stop.

Nobody was injured in that incident and anyone with information is urged to contact police.
