Commuters in Melbourne’s west are being warned to brace for weeks of significant delays as part of a major freeway shuts down for works.

At 9pm on Friday, the inbound exit and ramp from the M80 Ring Rd to the West Gate Fwy will close for more than two weeks.

This will cause huge delays as it is the main route for residents in Melbourne’s west to get to the CBD and motorists have been told to allow for 45 minutes of extra travel time.

The ramp will reopen at 5am on Monday, September 6.

To detour around the closure, drivers can take the Boundary Rd exit, then Little Boundary Rd and the freeway entry at Grieve Pde.

Those who miss the Boundary Rd exit can divert later in their journey by continuing on the Princes Fwy towards Werribee and making a U-turn at Kororoit Creek Rd to head towards the city.

Due to the significant delays on the roads, commuters are urged to consider public transport instead.

The reason for the closure is for asphalting and construction works to add an extra lane on the M80 entry ramp.

It’s part of the West Gate tunnel project, which will eventually cut travel times between the city and Melbourne’s west.

There are more closures to come and in October, the Williamstown Rd exit ramp on the West Gate Fwy citybound will close until mid-November.
