An emergency response is underway this afternoon.

A bus driver has died and a number of school students have been injured in a terrifying crash in a town north of Melbourne.

The bus was carrying about 32 students from Assumption College when it veered off the road and struck a tree on Wandong Road in Kilmore, according to Victoria Police.

The bus driver, a 65-year-old Wallan man, died at the scene.

In a statement to social media, the school said “thankfully, none of the students were seriously injured” but some “were treated for minor injuries at the scene by emergency services”.

The statement said all students were expected to return home this evening.

“Counselling and other support will be made available to students and families,” it stated.

“The College immediately notified all families and Principal Paul Finneran and other staff travelled to the scene.

“The College thanks emergency services for their rapid and professional response.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all involved in this accident.”

An Ambulance Victoria statement said significant resources were dispatched, including two ambulance helicopters and 10 on-road resources.

“Paramedics treated one child on the scene for a minor upper-body injury and transported them to Kilmore Hospital in a stable condition,” the statement read.

A tradie named Colby was one of the first on the crash scene and told the Herald Sun he helped rescue students.

“When I got there me and another fella jumped through the window and helped the kids out, I wasn’t sure of the bus driver though,” he told the Herald Sun.

He said they smashed one of the front emergency windows open with a hammer, brought a ladder over and helped the students out from the top of the bus.

Epping-Kilmore Road is closed in both directions between the Hume Freeway and the Northern Highway.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by Victoria Police.
