A man armed with a machete allegedly attacked another man in Melbourne's Queen Street area just before 2.

A man has been injured in a machete attack in Melbourne’s CBD overnight.

He was struck by a man armed with the weapon in the Queen St area just after 2.20am on Monday.

A male, believed to be in his 20s, was treated for mid body injuries and transported to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

Ambulance Victoria said a woman was taken to hospital in a serious condition, but it is not clear if her injuries are from the machete attack.

A messy scene was left behind with bloodied paper, handbags and heels strewn over the footpath.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated,” police said.
