The saga began when officers spotted an allegedly stolen black Honda on Station St about 3.30pm on Friday and pulled alongside it at a red light at the intersection of Eley Rd.

An officer got out of the police vehicle and the man driving the Honda allegedly picked up a firearm and pointed it at the officer, then fled the scene.

Nobody was injured in that incident and the 52-year-old Heidelberg West man was arrested about 2.30pm on Saturday following a major police operation.

He suffered a dig bite during the arrest and was taken to hospital under police guard with non-life-threatening injuries.

7NEWS understands the man was not allowed to be at the home at which he was arrested, and the homeowner, a family member, departed when he arrived.

He will be interviewed at a later stage.
