A man has died, and a woman is fighting for life after a tree fell on their car at Gellibrand on Wednesday.

A male driver has been killed and his female passenger critically injured when a tree fell on their car in Gellibrand, 175km southwest of Melbourne.

They were both trapped inside the car for more than an hour after the tree fell on Main Rd, near Berrys Rd, about 1.30pm on Wednesday.

The driver died at the scene while the passenger was flown to hospital.

Both are yet to be formally identified, Victoria Police said.

Investigations are ongoing and the exact circumstances of the crash remain unclear.
