Melbourne Grammar team wins in honour of late crew mate.

Melbourne Grammar School have claimed an emotional victory at the prestigious Head of the River, a month after their crewmate tragically died.

The Second VIII eight crew held off Scotch to win the biggest race on the APS calendar at Nagambie, two hours north of Melbourne.

It came just five weeks after crew member Ed Millear died following an incident during training.

“What a win for Melbourne Grammar School after a very very difficult season, they have got the win in the race that matters,” the commentator said as they crossed the line.

Millear, 17, was training at the school’s boat shed next to the Yarra River when he collapsed. He was treated at the scene before being rushed to The Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

The student was admitted to the ICU and put on a ventilator, but died the following morning.

Melbourne Grammar principal Philip Grutzner said the school community was mourning a “wonderful young man” who died too soon.

“He was a cheerful, friendly and easy-going person who demonstrated great care and empathy for his fellow students and for others through enthusiastic participation in service activities,” he said.

“In relation to his studies, he was hardworking and diligent. He aspired to a career in the commerce sector in the future.”

As well as being a member of the Second VIII rowing crew, Ed was also a talented rugby player, playing in the First XV last year.

Ed’s family has a long connection with Melbourne Grammar, with his great-great-great-grandfather graduating in 1884.

Several other family members have attended the school since.

The private school is considered a national leader in school rowing, with several alumni having competed in multiple Olympics.

Students Fergus Hamilton and Jack Robertson, who graduated in 2017 and 2016 respectively, competed in the most recent Olympics in Paris in August last year.
