A 49-year-old man was shot in the upper arm during an altercation outside a shisha bar and cafe in Altona North, Melbourne's west, at 11:30pm.

A manhunt is underway after a 49-year-old man was shot outside a shisha bar in Melbourne’s west overnight.

The shooting occurred at 11.30pm at a cafe and shisha bar in a small shopping precinct in Altona North, which also houses a fish and chip shop, kebab shop and massage parlour.

Police say an altercation broke out just outside the venue before the man was shot at least once in the upper arm.

The victim was rushed to hospital where police are hoping to speak with him about what unfolded.

In a dramatic development, the shooter’s getaway car was found burnt out just 800 metres from the scene several hours later.

The armed crime squad has taken over the investigation, with two active crime scenes this morning — the cafe where the shooting occurred and where the stolen vehicle was discovered.

Investigators are examining CCTV footage from the area as they work to determine whether the victim was specifically targeted and what motivated the attack.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
