Police chase stolen van through Melbourne

Incredible vision has emerged as a man trying to evade police crashed the van he had carjacked, before being run over by oncoming traffic as he attempted to flee the scene.

Images from the 7NEWS helicopter hovering over Point Cook outside Melbourne on Friday show the dramatic moments when multiple crashes occur and a man is thrown over the bonnet of an unmarked police car and onto the road.

In the tense moments straight after, police are seen jumping from the vehicle and converging on the injured man, who was thrown to the side of the car before being arrested.

Police confirmed they were called to St Kilda Road in Melbourne following reports that a man had his van stolen at around 5.40am.

The vehicle was then spotted by patrol officers in Footscray and followed by the Air Wing as it sped through several suburbs including Melbourne, Port Melbourne, Spotswood, Carnegie, Sunshine, Dandenong and Point Cook.

During the pursuit the van hammered into a range of parked and moving vehicles before finally came to a stop after crashing into a street sign at the intersection of Dunnings and Palmers roads in Point Cook just after 1pm.

“The 36-year-old Point Cook man sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital under police guard,” Victoria Police said in a statement.
