One of Melbourne’s major motorways has been thrown into chaos after a serious truck crash has caused major delays for morning commuters.

Parts of the Monash Freeway have been closed and the traffic lines are banking back for kilometres.

The truck rollover happened around 6am on Friday on the major artery and all outbound lanes have been closed between Wellington and Police roads.

The extent of injuries are not yet known, but there are fears for the driver as the cab has smashed into itself and almost separated from the tray.

Drivers are being urged to find alternative routes and to allow at least an extra 20 minutes to use the detours that are in place.

There are also significant delays in the area towards the city despite all of those lanes remaining open, with delays of up to 30 minutes.

Drivers travelling to the city from the southeast should use the Princes Highway to avoid congestion.
