Danny Pearson explained the flooding was not caused by an act of vandalism, but of passion.

A man and woman have been arrested after their “amourous” actions at a Melbourne CBD train station damaged a water pipe and flooded several platforms.

The pair accessed a stairwell connecting the platforms at Melbourne Central Station and damaged a water pipe and sprinkler late on October 10.

The sprinkler caused “extensive flooding” to several platforms and both Melbourne Central and Flagstaff Railway stations had to be evacuated as a result.

It was initially believed the damaged water pipe was an act of vandalism however CCTV footage showed the couple were engaging in “amorous” relations at the time of the incident, Victoria’s Transport Minister confirmed last week.

A 30-year-old man from Ringwood has now been arrested over the incident and is expected to be charged with criminal damage, wilful damage, public nuisance and interference with a fire apparatus.

He was remanded in custody for unrelated matters.

The woman, a 32-year-old from St Albans, was also arrested but released pending further enquiries.

The flooding caused significant delays to the city’s underground rail network.

Among those impacted were throngs of Olivia Rodrigo fans trying to get home after her second Melbourne concert at Rod Laver Arena.
