A serious crash on a major Melbourne freeway is causing long traffic delays, including for those heading to the airport.

The crash, which involved at least two cars and a truck, happened on the Calder Fwy just after the turnoff to the Tullamarine Fwy near DFO Essendon about 7am on Wednesday.

All of the outbound lanes of the Calder Fwy have been closed and traffic is building quickly.

Drivers should take the early exit at Bulla Rd and stick in the right lanes to merge onto the Calder Fwy, but if they miss that exit they can continue on the Tullamarine Fwy and exit at Melrose Dr.

They then need to take Westfield Dr onto the M80 to get back to the Calder Fwy.

Those heading to Melbourne Airport are urged to allow plenty of extra time due to the congestion.

It is unknown at this stage if anyone has been injured in the crash.

Debris is strewn across the four lanes, including what appears to be the tray of a ute that has separated from the vehicle and landed in the emergency lane.
