Police are out in force in Port Melbourne as pro-Palestine demonstrators prepare to rally.

A major police operation is underway at the Port of Melbourne as pro-Palestine demonstrators prepare to gather near Todd Road.

Around 30 to 40 officers, including members of the public order response team and mounted branch, have been deployed in anticipation of the rally, which is expected to begin on Friday morning.

Speaking on Sunrise live from the scene, reporter Andrew McCormack said there is “quite a strong police presence” at the site, where authorities are not taking any chances.

The demonstration, described by organisers as a “pro-testival” with a festival atmosphere, is being held to protest against weapons manufacturing operations linked to Israel.

It’s unknown at this point how many protesters plan to attend.

Police remain cautious after recent city protests turned violent when rival groups clashed.

Officers will continue monitoring the situation throughout the morning to ensure public safety and prevent disruptions to nearby businesses.
