He was crossing the busy road with his nine-year-old brother and 12-year-old sister when the tragedy occurred.

A school bag was seen on the side of the road in the aftermath of the incident.

NSW Police Inspector Craig McEvoy said the car initially stopped, and the driver — an 84-year-old woman — got out before allegedly getting back in and driving away.

Police will allege she did not render any assistance.

CPR was performed by locals, including a nurse, but Caleb died at the scene.

The car, an early model Nissan Pulsar, was found at an address in Teesdale not long after and the driver is currently assisting police, McEvoy said.

McEvoy said the boy’s family were “shattered”.

“It’s the worst news ... let alone being witnessed by his siblings so understandably the family are grieving, they’re trying to process what’s occurred.”

Covenant College, where Caleb was a student, said the school community was devastated.

“We are devastated by news of the death of a student as a result of being struck by a vehicle while on the way to school,” principal Joshua McEwen said.

“This has come as a huge shock to our close school community at Covenant College.

“Our sympathies and prayers are with the family and we are offering support to them, as well as to students, staff and those affected by this loss.

“At this time our priority is the wellbeing of our school community, and we are praying that God’s peace and comfort will prevail for all at this time.”

Teesdale is about 34km west of Geelong.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
