Spectator struck by flying wheel as sprint car fails on Avalon Raceway, northeast of Geelong

A spectator was injured at Victoria's Avalon Raceway when a sprint car lost a wheel during racing.

A racing spectator has been injured by flying car parts at a Victorian speedway.

He was struck by a sprint car wheel as it flew off the vehicle at Avalon Raceway in Lara, northeast of Geelong, on Friday night.

Races were stopped while paramedics treated the injured victim.

The patient’s condition remains unclear at this stage.

The Avalon Raceway incident comes less than a month after 13 people were injured in a demolition derby crash at the Walcha Showground in NSW.

One person was left fighting for life after the competing car crashed crashed through a fence and hit a mobile grandstand, hitting eight men and three women aged between 20 and 75.

A 54-year-old man suffered critical spinal and hip injuries.

The driver of the derby car involved had crashed on the track just moments earlier.
