Police officers who rushed to a busy Melbourne shopping centre to reports of a knife-wielding man were left surprised at what they were confronted with.

The call to officers from security came through about 7.20pm on Wednesday after the ‘armed’ man was seen walking around Southland Shopping Centre in the city’s southeast.

With lights and sirens on, police rushed to the centre and found the 24-year-old outside the Village Cinemas.

But as soon as they laid eyes on him, they realised he was dressed in a costume complete with a life-like imitation sword.

The young man was at Southland to see the action anime movie ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba’ and the costume was for the screening.

Police seized his fake sword and told him “it was best to leave all weaponry at home next time.”

“No demons were slayed and the man enjoyed watching the movie without further incident,” a statement from officers said.

The animated dark fantasy action film is based on a manga series and follows a teenager who joins demon slayers, seeking vengeance for his murdered family.
