Victoria Police are searching for a man who they believe can help with inquiries into an alleged attempted kidnapping of a child from a street in an inner-city suburb in Melbourne.

Police say two boys, aged 14 and five, were walking along Eldridge St, Footscray when a man approached them about 3.50pm on Monday.

The man allegedly attempted to pick up the five-year-old before punching the older boy in the face and knocking him to the ground.
