Two prospectors have struck gold, pocketing a nugget estimated to be worth $160,000.

Amalgamated Prospectors and Leaseholders Association State president James Allison told the Kalgoorlie Miner about the men he was acquainted with at Sandstone — a town about 400km north-west of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

He said the men, who had chosen to remain anonymous, were prospecting near the town when their detector went off.

The “good mates” who had been prospecting for decades came across a one-ounce nugget worth more than $5000 in one of their routine morning searches at the end of May — and were even more delighted when they discovered that was not the end of their luck.

While one of the men retrieved the one-ounce nugget, the other continued to scope the area with the detector and picked up a second sound.

Mr Allison said the noise led to the men digging up another rock, roughly 250mm deep, and weighing in at 895g, worth $161,000, according to the Perth Mint spot price on June 8.

After the big discovery, the prospectors retrieved another one-ounce piece.

The men celebrated over a beer that evening and continued to prospect the following morning.
