Anger as person appears to perform ‘Griddy’ on dead whale at City Beach

Video of a person dancing on a dead whale carcass has sparked outrage in the community.

The 13m-long mammal’s remains have attracted hundreds of spectators and quite a few ocean predators to City Beach in Perth after washing up on Monday morning.

Disturbing vision was posted to social media appearing to show a person performing a viral dance called the Griddy on the 13m whale’s carcass.

“I find that very disappointing, upsetting,” one person said.

Another said: “That’s pretty immature and just bad behaviour.”

A third said: “That’s a bit out of order, you know. Show some respect.”

When rangers arrived on Tuesday morning they found someone sitting on top of the whale. 

Cambridge Mayor Gary Mack slammed the behaviour.

“People shouldn’t be doing that at all,” Mack said.

“The fact that a whale has lost its life is one thing, and it’s not a play thing. It’s very serious.”

Fisheries officers have been patrolling the area in a boat after several large sharks were spotted circling close to shore.

So far, a 3.7 metre great white off Floreat Groyne and another 3.1m in size at City Beach have been tagged. 

Another four metre long white shark is in the process of being tagged.

“When there are whale carcasses we make sure that we use that as an opportunity to tag sharks,” Fisheries Minister Jackie Jarvis said.

The whale carcass will remain at City Beach overnight before the removal process begins early on Wednesday. 

An excavator will be called in before the carcass is transported to landfill. 

“We would prefer not to have pedestrians on the beach just to allow the safe operations of quite large plant equipment and machinery,” Mack said.

The clean up is expected to soar to more than $200,000 and the local council is expected to call on the state government for assistance. 

City Beach remains closed between the Floreat Drain carpark and south of Bodmin Ave.
