A family-owned business in Western Australia has been crowned the best fish and chips in the country for the second time.

Albany’s Hooked on Middleton Beach won the top gong at the 2024 National Seafood Industry Awards this month, taking home the title of best take-away fish and chips.

The accolade, presented by the peak body representing Australia’s seafood industry, is awarded to a take-away food outlet that has demonstrated “excellence in consistently providing customers with quality seafood, and has contributed substantially towards a positive public profile for the seafood industry”.

Hooked on Middleton Beach opened its doors in 2016 and prides itself on being “not just a fish and chip restaurant”.

The business beat Tasmania’s Stanley Seafoods and Fisheries on the Spit in Queensland for the win.

The family-run team is no stranger to a win, having claimed the enviable title of best fish and chips in the national Fish and Chips Awards in 2018.

In May, they also won the take-away fish and chips award at the 2024 WA Seafood Industry Awards.

Owners Hayley Lutley, husband Jeremy Lutley and Hayley’s parents, Shane and Janine Vale said they were “so proud” to have won.

“We are so honoured to receive this award and are proud to be able to showcase the quality WA seafood which we have access to in the amazing south coast of Albany,” the team said.

“A massive shoutout to our dedicated team of staff, our loyal customers and, most importantly, our local fishermen who supply us with the best quality fresh and local fish.

“As a small family-run business, we are incredibly proud of what we have been able to create and achieve over the past eight years at Hooked, and in our 20 years in the industry.”

Best seafood restaurant was presented to Hursey Seafoods in Tasmania, beating Poyer’s in NSW and Snapper Rocks Bar and Kitchen in the NT.

South Australia’s Coorong Wild Seafood came out on top against nominees Wild Seafood Adventures in Tasmania and Sea West in WA to win best seafood experience.
