It is understood the man was taken to the Coral Bay Nursing Post.

The WA Country Health Service told 7NEWS.com.au: “We can confirm the patient is in a stable condition.”

The species of shark involved in the incident is unknown, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) said.

“DPIRD is working with local authorities to coordinate responses,” the agency said.

A report made to SharkSmart said an unidentified shark was spotted swimming just five metres from the shoreline.

People in the area have been told to take additional caution and take note of any beach closures.

The incident followed a warning to beachgoers about a whale carcass seen floating at nearby Point Cloates.

“It is possible the carcass will act as an attractant that could lead to sharks coming close in to shore along this stretch of coast,” authorities said.

Fourteen Mile Beach Camp sits adjacent to the world famous Ningaloo Marine Park, popular for its whale sharks and hundreds of fish species.
