The male cyclist, 59, was critically injured at the intersection of Spearwood Ave and Howson Way about 4.30am.

The rider, who lives in the suburb, was declared dead at the scene.

The male Veolia rubbish truck driver, 58, was uninjured.

“We are working with the emergency services as they carry out their investigations,” a spokesperson for Veolia told 7NEWS.

Major Crash officers are examining the scene and have appealed for witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers.

‘Traumatic’ 24 hours

The crash happened about 50 minutes after a Toyota RAV4 and Toyota Camry taxi collided on Leach Hwy in Cloverdale, killing four people.

The driver of the RAV4, who is yet to be identified, died at the scene.

The male taxi driver, a father of three, and a mother and daughter aged 56 and 81 also died at the scene.

“A very confronting scene for emergency services to arrive at early this morning,” Sunrise reporter Tina Altieri said.

Detective Senior Sergeant Hugh Le Tessier said it had been an “incredibly tragic” period on our roads.

“Last year finished very badly from a road toll point of view,” he said.

“This year hasn’t started very well - and particularly the last 24 hours have been very traumatic for a lot of people.”

He appealed for drivers to take care, follow the road rules and “keep your wits about you”.
