A little boy is fighting for life at Perth Children's Hospital after being crushed at a WA museum.

A young boy was critically injured when a parking meter fell on him at a museum south of Perth.

The five-year-old was crushed by a disused machine in the courtyard of the Bunbury Museum and Heritage Centre about 10.30am on Wednesday.

He was flown by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to Perth Children’s Hospital where he remains on life support on Thursday.

7NEWS understands the emergency, which took place during a school holiday event, was caught on security cameras.

WorkSafe is looking into the incident and said an investigator was sent to the museum on Wednesday.

The City of Bunbury said it is working with authorities “to understand the circumstances surrounding this incident”.

“Our thoughts are with the child, their family, and all involved, and everyone impacted,” Bunbury chief executive Alan Ferris said.

“The safety and wellbeing of our community members, especially our children, is of the utmost importance to us.

“We thank police and paramedics who not only helped the child, but museum staff and community members who witnessed the incident and provided immediate assistance.

“The City has offered support, including counselling, to all staff involved.”

The council said it “will provide and update when we can”.

State member for Bunbury Don Punch said it was a “terrible tragedy”.

“I know that it’s being felt by the family, our whole community and particularly the staff who were there on site,” he said.

“They acted very quickly and the boy did get medical help very quickly but it’s a tragic, tragic situation.”

Police Minister Paul Papalia described the incident as “terribly sad”.

“I hope, and I’m sure everybody does, that (the boy) pulls through and recovers,” he said.

The museum will be closed Thursday and Friday.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and thank our community for their patience and understanding during this period,” the museum said on Facebook.

Bunbury is located 170km south of Perth.
