A man has been killed in a crash involving a prime mover towing two trailers near a famous gold mining town in WA’s Mid West.

The 63-year-old was driving a Mazda BT-50 utility that collided with the heavy vehicle on Mt Magnet-Sandstone Rd in Paynesville, 650km northeast of Perth and 80km east of Mount Magnet, WA’s longest surviving gold mining settlement and “the magnetic centre of the outback”.

The crash happened just before 12.30pm on Sunday and the driver died at the scene.

A 42-year-old man behind the wheel of the truck sustained minor injuries.

Major Crash detectives are investigating the fatal incident and have appealed for information.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers.

WA’s road toll is at an eight-year high, with 155 deaths recorded across the state to this point in 2024.
