His son Brooklyn said he grabbed the alleged thug and tackled him to the ground, where he was kept until officers arrived to make an arrest.
Authorities allege a flick knife was seized when the man was taken into custody.
“I don’t know a bloke around here that wouldn’t have done what we did,” Bathurst senior said.
“The police officers are heroes because they’re doing it every single day.
“We’re just the guys that in one moment of time had an opportunity to be brave.”

A 31-year-old Brabham man has been charged with a dozen offences.
Police say his alleged rampage started with an aggravated robbery in the Perth suburb of Gosnells about 3.30am on Tuesday.
“The man approached a woman reversing out of her driveway, entered her vehicle, and made threats while holding what appeared to be a firearm,” authorities said.
The man allegedly indecently assaulted the woman before telling her to stop, where she was able to flee the car.
The car was found crashed by the roadside an hour away in Bindoon, the same suburb where a second vehicle was allegedly taken during a burglary at a property.
That second car was found abandoned nearby.
When the accused allegedly attempted to steal a third vehicle he was restrained by the Bathursts, police said.
The accused has been charged with 12 offences including deprivation of liberty, indecent assault, possession of a prohibited weapon and two counts of stealing a motor vehicle.
