Matthew Lawson: 25-year-old WA man pleads guilty to attempted murder over City Beach hammer attack

The 25-year-old man who attacked a tradie in City Beach, severing his leg, has pleaded guilty over the horror incident.
Matthew William Lawson, of Beckenham, faced Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with one count of attempted murder over the attack on Monday morning.
He appeared in court without a lawyer, pleading guilty to the charge when it was put to him by Magistrate Janelle Scutt.

Ms Scutt repeatedly asked Lawson if he wanted legal advice before entering his plea, warning him that the charge carried a “lengthy term of imprisonment”.
Lawson declined the offer.
He also declined to have the matter adjourned before entering his plea and turned down a request to have pre-sentence and psychological reports carried out.
The somewhat bizarre and yet brief court appearance was wrapped up without Lawson making an application for bail and without any facts about the offence being read.
Lawson was remanded into custody and will face the Supreme Court on August 21.
It comes as the 29-year-old victim remains in Royal Perth Hospital in a critical but stable condition on Tuesday.
