The mother of a Perth tradesman critically injured in a Bali scooter crash on Sunday says his family have an agonising “waiting game” to see how he responds to treatment.

Clarkson man Shane Ramsey, 30, was on his way to watch a broadcast of Sunday’s UFC event with friends when he struck a pole in Seminyak.

He suffered a fractured skull, severe brain damage and bleeding in his lungs.

Ramsey underwent surgery and is likely to be in a coma at BIMC Hospital Kuta for a number of days to allow for the intense swelling on his brain to subside.

“He’s done a lot of damage, there’s no question about that,” Catherine Ramsey told 7NEWS.com.au.

“Doctors just aren’t sure of the scale just yet.”

She said doctors would know more when he is well enough to be woken.

“It’s a waiting game for him to wake up,” she said.

Ramsey had been in Bali for a weekend wedding where he was a groomsman.

The friends had set off on Sunday morning to go and watch the mixed martial arts blockbuster being held in Perth when the crash happened about 9.30am.

His mum was on a plane within hours to join her boy’s friends by his bedside.

“They’ve been his friends all the way from childhood. These guys have not left the hospital. They’ve been here 24/7. They’re an incredible group,” she said.

“He’s got all his family friends with him. We’re praying for him.”

Ramsey had completed a carpentry apprenticeship just three weeks ago and was excited about launching into his new career and buying a home of his own on his return to Perth.

Now his family’s main goal is getting him well enough to fly him back to WA.

“Surgery alone cost $53,000. Every night in the hospital is an additional $9000. The flight to bring him home is going to cost a minimum of $150,000,” friend and campaign organiser Amyleigh Mitchell said.

“We just want to bring Shane home as soon as possible to be closer to all his friends and family.”

‘Incredible support’

More than $60,000 has been raised so far and Catherine said she had been blown away by the support.

“The messages that we’ve received have been that Shane is someone who gives so much but takes so little and expects so little,” she said.

“I’m his mum, I love him no matter what, but to hear that he is so selfless is amazing.

“We’ve received incredible messages and donations from people we don’t even know, people even offering to fly over to be with him.

“It’s incredible, it’s blown my mind.”

A colleague who recently caught up with Ramsey described the tradie as “a great guy”.

“I saw Shane a few weeks ago wrapping up his last units (and completing) his apprenticeship and had a great catch-up with him. You forget how fragile life can be (and) how quick everything can change,” he said.
