The mother of a driver killed when his car collided with cattle in WA’s Kimberley region has shared details of their final conversation.

Perth man Rhys Dwyer — better known to his 11,000 Instagram followers as Freddy James — was behind the wheel of a Toyota LandCruiser that crashed on Great Northern Hwy in Mueller Ranges just after 6am on July 3.

Dwyer, 34, suffered critical injuries and died at the scene, between Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing.

Later that morning, his mother received a knock at the door from police who delivered the devastating news.

“I didn’t believe it. I still don’t,” Allison Walker told 7NEWS.com.au

“I was going ‘this is not real’.”

Dwyer was heading towards Broome, midway through a holiday where he criss-crossed the state and even stopped in the Northern Territory, when the accident occurred.

It was a cruel and sudden end to the trip the carpenter and builder had been enjoying with mates.

“I’d spoken to him the night before and I said ‘drive safely’,” Walker said.

Walker said travel, cars and Dwyer’s three-year-old rottweiler Koa were his passions.

Pictures of her boy at the beach with his 4WD and dog in shot summed up his life best, she said.

She described Dwyer, one of three siblings, as a generous and “spirited” family man who would jump at the chance to help others.

“He had a heart as big as anybody. If somebody needed him, he would be there,” she said.

“He would go above and beyond.”

Family and friends will say their final goodbyes to Dwyer at a service in Joondalup on Friday.

Walker has been busy tidying up her son’s affairs but says the service will be the “hardest part”.

She said the family had been overwhelmed by support and donations that have flooded a fundraising page launched to support them.

“(Dwyer) was an extraordinarily kind, loving, beautiful and adventurous soul who had so much more life to live,” loved ones shared on GoFundMe.

Another post on socials came from someone who had also spoken to James just hours before his death.

“You will be missed, bruz. Hug your loved ones tight (because my) mate had done more country miles than most. It can happen to anyone,” the post read.

Major Crash officers are investigating the incident and have appealed for witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers.
