WA Police said that a force helicopter was patrolling over Belmont when a red laser “struck directly into the helicopter cabin”, causing “immediate disorientation and stress” to the three officers on board.

The helicopter was allegedly targeted four times in eight minutes.

Authorities have said previously that the sudden flash of light can cause temporary blindness.

“PolAir captured the offender on video at a residence approximately 4.5km in a straight line away from the Perth International Airport runway,” police said.

“They directed police officers on the ground to the location they identified and officers located a man in the rear yard with the alleged laser used against (the) pilots.”

Police also allegedly found a crossbow with 11 arrows during a search of the home.

A 52-year-old man from Rivervale has been charged with causing fear or alarm with a laser; possession of a prohibited weapon; and possession of a controlled weapon.

The matter will be heard by the Perth Magistrates Court in March.
