Police launch investigation into woman’s sudden death following roadside breath test in Geraldton

An internal investigation has been launched after a woman died in “police presence” following a roadside breath testing operation in Geraldton on Monday night.

Police say officers were conducting the RBT operation on Brand Highway in Mount Tarcoola about 6.55pm when they stopped a female driver.

The woman completed the breathalyser testing process, and was issued a driving prohibition notice and then released from police custody.

A police spokesperson said moments later, the woman began to experience a medical issue, and police officers offered assistance, which was then declined.

The officers contacted St John WA as a precaution, and a brief moment later the woman became unresponsive.

Police officers were quick to act and administer first aid until paramedics arrived.

The woman was then transported to hospital by St John WA paramedics, but she was later declared dead.

The spokesperson said in line with WA Police Force policy, the investigation into the woman’s death was being overseen by the internal affairs unit, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
