A former private school principal accused of possessing child exploitation material has died suddenly.

Paul Whitehead, who led Bold Park Community School for nearly a decade, was scheduled to appear in Midland Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

But his lawyer, Carole MacKay, informed the court on Tuesday morning that the 56-year-old had died on Monday.

The three charges that he was facing — including one count of possessing child exploitation material, failing to obey an officer and unlawfully possessing a controlled or prescription drug — were discontinued.

It is understood the circumstances of his death were not considered suspicious.

Mr Whitehead, who had been on long service and study leave from the school for the past six months, was arrested and charged earlier this month after police executed a search warrant at his Ellenbrook home and seized electronic devices allegedly belonging to him.

Police had alleged the devices that were seized contained child exploitation material on them.

The alleged offences occurred while Mr Whitehead was a school principal, but police said there was no evidence that any student from the school was depicted.

Bold Park Community School acting principal Felicity Kinsella said the school had been advised of Mr Whitehead’s recent sudden passing.

“This news has come as a shock, and our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends during this difficult time,” she said.

“As always, the safety and wellbeing of our children is our priority, and we will continue to ensure a nurturing environment here at our school.”

Ms Kinsella said counselling was being offered to members of the school community who felt in need of support.

“Our Bold Park Community School spirit has always been resilient, and together, we will navigate this challenging period with care and unity,” she said.

Mr Whitehead joined the school — which has campuses in Wembley and Maylands — in 2010 and was appointed principal in 2014.
