Woman bitten by shark while snorkelling off WA coast at Abrolhos Islands

Emergency services have rushed to a popular tourist island off the coast of Western Australia after a woman was bitten by a shark while snorkelling.

A female was bitten by an unknown species of shark while snorkelling at Rat Island in the Abrolhos Islands just before 5.30pm on Tuesday.

The island is 80km off the coast of Geraldton.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development are currently coordinating an emergency response to help the shark bite victim.

The woman’s condition is unknown at this stage.

People have been urged to take additional caution in the Rat Island area and check for shark activity on the SharkSmart website or app.
