Wollongong murder: Man charged after body found in stairwell

A man has been charged with murder after a body was found in the stairwell of a busy commuter car park.

Emergency services were called to the car park at Station St in Wollongong about 7.20am on Sunday after the body of a 68-year-old man was discovered at the site.

Detectives arrested a 37-year-old man about three hours later only a short walking distance away from the city-centre facility, next to a train station.

He was taken to Wollongong police station, where he was charged with murder.

The man is expected to face Wollongong Local Court on Monday.

A crime scene has been set up at the car park, which is expected to remain closed on Monday.

Police have appealed for anyone with information about the incident or who was in the area at the time of the death to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
