Once she gets close enough, one of the officers sprays the woman twice with capsicum spray, causing her to back off momentarily.
She is sprayed a third time when she again comes at police with the knife.
The woman does not appear to let up and continues to come at the officers despite being continually sprayed in the face.
As one officer throws the spray can to the side, and they begin to retreat, the woman runs towards the cops.
After refusing to drop the weapon, the woman was shot in the leg by one of the officers.
She was arrested and taken to hospital with serious injuries.
People who were in the area when the incident happened told 7NEWS there were families in the park nearby.
“It was a person standing by the toilet block, and she had a knife in her hand and there were a couple of other people asking if she was OK,” one witness said.
Mario Fenech, another witness, said the incident was “frightening” but that police did the right thing.
“There is a playground there and there were kids playing basketball as well.”
The woman remains at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.
