A woman has been hit by her own car after trying to help a passenger getting out of the taxi with which she had just collided in Canberra on Monday morning.

The woman’s car collided with the taxi just before 10.20am at the Kambah Village Shops carpark at Primmer Ct in Tuggeranong, an ACT district, The Canberra Times reported.

After the collision, the woman got out of her car to help a person with a stroller who was getting out of the taxi.

However, she was struck by her own vehicle, which had not been properly braked.

Up to 20 bystanders rushed out and performed emergency treatment on the woman as police, emergency services and paramedics were called to the scene.

One person was taken to hospital “in a critical condition”, said the Emergency Services Agency.

“Two women were treated at the scene before the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision was taken to hospital in a serious condition,” police said.

A passerby who has worked as a local cab driver since 2012 told The Canberra Times he had never witnessed such an incident before.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.
