A new reusable shopping bag sold at Woolworths for $20 has divided opinions, with some people outraged by the price tag while others say it’s fair given the bag’s luxury designer.

The Universal Bag by UK accessories designer Anya Hindmarch has officially hit Woolies stores around the country.

Adopting the Woolworths green colourway, the shopping bag is made from 100 per cent recycled plastic and is guaranteed to last 10 years.

Hindmarch started the Universal Bag project in 2021 and has designed reusable and durable shopping bags for food retailers all over the world including Waitrose, Sainsburys and Selfridges in the UK and Seijo Ishi and Meidi-Ya in Japan.

The new Woolworths bag is the first time Hindmarch has brought the initiative to Australia.

Its price tag has caught the attention of shoppers who have called out the supermarket giant online.

A TikTok video, posted by @allylikesshopping who was showing off the new bag, unexpectedly went viral — racking up more than 78,000 views.

Several people expressed shock at the price.

“Cost of living crisis and Woolworths thought let’s bring out a $20 shopping bag,” one person said.

“$20 is insane … it’s not even insulated … looks like a solid bag … but the prize is crazy,” another wrote.

Others said $20 for an Anya Hindmarch bag was quite reasonable given her usual bags retail anywhere from $700 to $4000.

“$20 for an Anya Hindmarch bag is a steal,” one person commented.

“Anya Hindmarch, IYKYK.”

Woolworths continues to offer other reusable bags from 25c.

The Universal Bag project has saved more than 230 tonnes of plastic from landfill to date, Hindmarch said.

“Plastic pollution remains a pressing environmental issue but working together with major global food retailers show the solution needs to be collaborative,” she said.

The luxury designer’s collaboration with food retailers began in 2007 when she launched the I Am Not A Plastic Bag campaign, partnering with Sainsburys to sell a reusable shopping tote.
