One of Australia’s biggest banks has shocked its 900,000 customers, announcing the closure of multiple branches across Australia.

Bank of Queensland, Australia’s 7th largest bank, announced it will close 14 branches in Queensland, Western Australia, New South Wales and Victoria in February.

This brings the number of branches slated to close between February 7 and 27 to 16.

“BOQ has made the difficult decision to close 14 branches as we continue to simplify operations, and more customers embrace digital banking,” a spokesperson told The Nightly.

“We are focused on supporting our people throughout this process and are pleased that most team members will transition to new roles across our network.”

The bank said they looked forward to welcoming their customers through “digital channels” and the Bank@Post services.

“14 bank branches closed. And Labor has done nothing to make protecting rural branches a priority,” one person wrote on X.

The University of Western Australia said in December that more than 2000 bank branches had closed across Australia since 2017, with many closures affecting rural communities.
